How to use it
- Set the length and character types.
- Click Generate.
- Copy the password into your password manager.
Why use it
- Create strong passwords you do not have to remember.
- Tune length and character sets to any site's requirements.
- Check how strong an existing password is.
- Uses cryptographically secure randomness.
- Nothing is ever saved or uploaded.
What makes a strong password?
A strong password is long and drawn from a large pool of possible characters, which produces a huge number of combinations. An attacker trying random guesses effectively has to hit one result out of billions of trillions. That is what "entropy" measures. Longer is the single most important factor, so aim for at least 12 to 16 characters.
Password best practices
- Use a unique password for every account.
- Store passwords in a reputable password manager instead of reusing them.
- Prefer passphrases or long random strings over short complex ones.
- Use multi-factor authentication wherever it is offered.
- Strong random generated passwords are far safer than memorable ones.
Healthier than a hash
Generating passwords locally means your candidate passwords are never sent over the network. Compare that to generators that create passwords on a server, where the password could be intercepted or logged. Here, everything happens in your own browser using the same secure randomness the browser uses for encryption.
